You are discharged when there are no remaining activities left on your schedule. The ward closes over the weekend so if you are in for more than one week, you either go home for the weekend to return on the monday, or, find accommodation locally such as a B&B if the hospital cannot find a bed for you in another ward.
The gaps are filled in 'on the fly' depending on the nature of your injuries and the treatment you're able to receive, for example massage & acupuncture along with the usual physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
